Another school year, another kid enters big school

Make the most out of life with Friso Four
As a mom, it was definitely hard for me to adjust when my daughter started studying in a big school a few months ago. From being so sheltered in preschool, I felt she was now entering the real world where she would be exposed to so many things beyond my control. Of course, I don’t think we can ever fully learn to let go of our kids no matter what age. We’re always there for them, helping and supporting them through the years.
But letting them experience things on their own will help them grow up. Yes, they will get hurt and make mistakes, but we have to realize that they are a lot stronger than we think and give them credit for.
During my daughter’s first week in Grade 1, I was so worried about so many things. How will she find her classroom by herself? Will she be able to eat her food? What if she has to go to the bathroom? What if there are bullies? I was almost at the point of wanting to go to school and wait there until dismissal every single day. Yes, serious! ;p
But then, to my amazement, my daughter would always come home from school all excited to tell me that she had fun! When I would check her lunchbox, her baon would be finished. She even told me she was able to go to the bathroom all by herself! My goodness, she really is a big girl already!
Now, all I worry about is getting her homework done and studying for tests. And of course, as our kids grow older and become busier with school and other activities, we have to remember to keep them healthy so they can make the most out of life’s experiences.
That’s why I’m glad I discovered Friso Four, which helps make our kids strong inside by taking the best of nature and science. From its farms, cows are nurtured with extra care to get top quality milk. Scientists make the most of this natural goodness with a special process that locks in milk’s nutrients called LockNutri technology. This preserves the natural milk protein without over-heating, making it easy to digest for delicate tummies. And as a mom, when I see how resilient my kids are, I’m more confident to let them out in the world to experience life to the fullest!
So moms, let us remember that there’s a bigger world out there for our kids to explore, which will further encourage their development. And if they are strong on the inside, they can take on every experience with us behind them every step of the way.

Starting big school... and learning to let go
It's the first week of school for many students, but for most parents like me, it's also the start of BIG SCHOOL or Grade 1. I just want to share my thoughts and feelings while they're still fresh since I'm sure in a few weeks or even months, I'll be laughing at how dramatic I was!

Tips for traveling with kids
Traveling with the whole family is definitely fun but tiring as well. Especially if you have young kids or babies in tow. I have three kids currently aged 6, 4 and 2 and it definitely is not as easy as it looks, especially if you don’t have the budget to bring a yaya with you. You will be exhausted from carrying the baby bags, lugging the stroller, cleaning up after them, keeping them entertained, and so on and so forth. You have to put your kids’ needs first and accept that not everything will go as planned. Even if you have your whole itinerary prepared months in advance, it can all depend on your kids’ moods that day like if they suddenly get sick or throw a major temper tantrum.
We are actually on a family trip right now since it's already the kids' summer break. And I'm sure a lot of you are also getting ready to go on or are planning your own vacations as well. So to help other parents out there, here’s some tips for a fuss-free family travel based on my experience.

I'm officially out of the calendar
Because I'm now 32 years old!!! haha! :)
Others say that after you turn 30, you sort of stop counting how old you are already. And I guess that's kind of true since my tita asked me yesterday how old I was and I sort of had to think twice about it haha! ;p
We celebrated by having a staycation in Fairmont Hotel this weekend (more on that soon) where we just spent the whole time eating and swimming. I also heard mass early this morning where I was able to give thanks for all the blessings that I've received this past year - the birth of my youngest son Skyler, the health and safety of my family, the chance to travel, the opportunities and new friends from blogging, and many more.
My birthday isn't over yet, so I hope you'll join me in celebrating my special day. And I'd like to thank you my dear readers for all your continued support. It makes me so happy to be able to share my life through this blog and know that I'm able to reach out to others who share the same passions as me. Cheers everyone! :)

Goodbye Typhoon Glenda!
Oh my goodness, Typhoon Glenda whipped through Manila only a few hours last July 16 but left behind so much destruction. I honestly have never felt so scared that our house would get destroyed because of the strong winds! I woke up at 3am that Wednesday to feed Skyler and for some reason I couldn't go back to sleep because of the rain. I could already feel the electricity fluctuating because the aircon and the lamp would keep shutting on and off for just a few seconds. I turned off the aircon in our room and the kids' room since it was cool anyways and just decided to go online just to check what was happening. Good thing we had also charged all of our phones and gadgets the night before since we were anticipating that there would be a brownout.
I was still awake at 4:30am when we lost electricity. Good thing all the kids were still asleep so we just held on to our flashlights. It was about 5:30 when Miley and Sabe woke up because they were also scared of the rain. They were asking to open the TV and the aircon, so I had to explain it was brownout and just gave them the iPad so they could play with their apps. We all just huddled in the room and waited for the storm to pass.
The winds were so strong that we could see the trees on the street falling down. One of our cars was parked outside the house so we were just praying nothing would fall on it. Our bamboo wall on one side of the house was slowly falling apart too. We also had some water come in the attic.
Good thing everything was pretty much okay after that. Hubby and our neighbor went outside when the winds died down to clear some of the trees that were blocking the road. Hubby also went around after and he told me so many trees had fallen everywhere, especially in the park. Some of the slides and swings were also destroyed.
We were thankful that the storm had passed and now we were just praying for the electricity to come back on. Our phone line was down too, but good thing our water supply was ok. The weather was pretty cool when it was still raining, but after a while it was just hot again. I just hated seeing my kids so uncomfortable, especially baby Skyler. He was so fussy even if I was fanning him like crazy. I could see beads of sweat on his little head and batok all the time. Miley and Sabe kept asking for cold water and to turn the electric fan on. They were all so sweaty even if I kept fanning them since they couldn't sit still too. Haaay may muscles na ako sa kakapaypay I swear haha! ;p
We found out the next day that there was already electricity in my Mom's place. So we all headed there Thursday afternoon. And let me tell you, I have never been so happy to have a glass of cold water! And also to go online haha! The little things you take for granted right?
I was asking my friends if they had light already and one of them said it was only brownout in their area for 2 hours! Swerte!!! However, we were hit with the rotating brownout Friday afternoon from about 4:30pm to 8:30pm. We decided to wait it out by having dinner in the mall. Finally, we got the news Saturday early morning that we light in our area already! Yahoo! I almost wanted to comment on other people's statuses on FB when they were complaining of the brownout for only a few hours or just 1 day. Heller, kami 3 days! But honestly, I kept reminding myself that losing electricity is nothing compared to other people who have lost their homes or even their lives...
So we finally went home yesterday morning and would you believe that in the late afternoon (about 4:30pm) our lights go off again??? We find out from our neighbors that only a couple of streets in our village lost electricity this time since there was an explosion near the guardhouse. It was weird (and annoying) since the house at the end of our street had lights! Kapag minalas ka nga naman! Good thing my in-laws (who live in the same village) had electricity so off we went again to stay there. And I'm sure you know how much stuff you bring when you have kids right? Akala mo lilipat na kami ng bahay sa dami ng dala namin every time haha!
Thankfully, the lights came back this morning already. But honestly, I'm traumatized already by all this brownout. We're all sick na naman nga probably from all the pawis and change in weather. It's so stressful for me as a parent seeing my kids scared and confused about what's happening. And also worrying about the stuff in the ref and freezer too! Good thing I don't have an enormous amount of frozen breastmilk (just about 10 bags since I direct feed most of the time anyway) otherwise I think I would have gone crazy!
I just pray we won't have to experience any more storms like this (fingers crossed!). It's just so scary and makes you appreciate the little things in life more. I also hope that everyone affected by this storm is ok and doing good now. And please, no more brownout! ;p

6. Write 11 questions for your nominated bloggers.
So here goes! :)
11 Random Facts about ME:
1. I
hate heights. I have such an insane fear
of it that when I’m just watching TV and there’s a scene on top of a really
high building or mountain (especially bungee jumping!), my hands get all cold
and clammy!
2. I
never learned how to use chopsticks. Whenever we eat in a Chinese/ Japanese/Korean
resto, I always have to ask for a spoon & fork.
3. I
love reality shows. Local, international, name it, I’m probably watching it (or
at least know about it).
4. I
can’t swim.
5. I
love biting my nails.
6. My
all time favorite color is purple.
7. I
used to have really bad asthma when I was a kid, but thankfully outgrew it. But
what remained is my allergy to shrimps and cockroaches!
8. I
know how to play the piano. Growing up, every Saturday morning was spent having
piano lessons at home.
9. I
always wanted (and still hope!) to have twins – a boy and a girl.
10. I
used to be obsessed with the Mighty Ducks movies when I was a kid (I also had
the biggest crush on Joshua Jackson haha!). Me and my friends all had
roller-blades and one time I thought I could go down this steep road. I ended
up rolling downhill and got such a big wound on my left knee. There’s still a
scar there until now.
11 Questions from Mrs.
Panda:
1. Your
weirdest childhood dream? That I would
get married to Prince William. Now, my dream is for Miley to marry Prince
George haha!
2. Name
of your first pet. A Chihuahua named
Spike
3. Sesame
street or Batibot. Batibot! Too bad they
don’t have it na now, I’d love for my kids to watch it too.
4. French
fries with ketchup or mayo. Definitely
mayo! I also prefer to eat hotdogs or
burgers with mayo instead of ketchup.
5. What
is your best vacation/getaway idea? For
a quick vacation, we like going to the Laiya, Batangas area. Or just check
Agoda.com for good deals and low rates, even for a hotel staycation in the city.
6. Hot or
cold water. Shower: hot, Drink: cold
7. Light
shower at night? Yes or No? With this
heat, yes!
8. SUV or
Sedan? With 3 kids, we need an SUV. But
if I’m driving, I prefer a Sedan.
9. Describe
your 7th birthday. It was held at Manila
Polo Club and I remember there was a magician and I was wearing this poofy
dress.
10. Condo
or House and lot? why? Both haha! I
think if we didn’t have kids, I’d prefer a condo. But with our family, definitely
a house & lot. Although I’d still hope to be able to buy a condo someday...
11. Why
do you love to blog? Just want a place to
be able to share my DIY projects & also have a sort of virtual diary to
remember important events. I love being able to look back and be able to read
all about my kids’ milestones, family trips and all my other experiences.

Highlights of my 2013
Today is the last day of 2013 and I just want to look back at 13 of my best memories and moments from this year before we bid it goodbye...
My kids' birthdays
I'm sure you all know that planning my kids' parties is something I look forward to every year. From picking the theme to making all the DIY decorations. I'm so happy of how Miley's Hello Kitty party and Sabe's Monster Bash turned out. Can't wait for their birthdays in 2014!
DIY projects
I haven't been able to make as much DIY projects around the house as I wanted to this year. Probably because I got pregnant and spent most of the time just lying in bed sleeping all day hehe. But I'm so proud of myself for tackling the ones I did - especially painting the room and the striped ceiling of my daughter's bedroom! I also love how our updated garden set and wooden sunburst mirror turned out.
Bangkok trip
I'm so thankful that hubby and I were able to spend some quality time in Bangkok. And of course, the shopping wasn't too bad either. ;p
Learning to drive
Probably my greatest achievement this year was FINALLY learning how to drive! I mostly just drive Miley to and from school, or go to the grocery near our place. I'm still scared to venture out on my own in places I'm not familiar with, but it's still an accomplishment for me to finally have this piece of independence.
Fixing the guest room
After 10 years, I was finally able to furnish and decorate this room! But with baby #3 on the way, we're planning to turn this into a nursery.
Features
Thank you so much for all the features and sponsored posts my blog has gotten this year! As well as the Smart Parenting article on Miley's Hello Kitty party and Miley appearing on Disney's Princess magazine. Hope for more of these in 2014! :)
Out of Town trips
I'm so thankful we were able to spend time with the family and bring the kids to such beautiful places around the country like Batangas, Baguio, and Cebu. Goal for next year are trips to Boracay and Palawan (hopefully!).
Real Living makeover
It was so unreal when my mom's house was chosen for Real Living magazine's monthly makeover! The end result was so beautiful, we still can't believe how lucky we got. Thank you Real Living for this gift!
Halloween
I totally loved our family costume and can't wait for next year! Any suggestions? ;p
Weddings galore
I'm so happy for all our loved ones who got married this year, especially for making us a part of their special day by including us in the entourage.
First out of the country trip with the kids
This was another first for us - bringing the kids to Singapore and onboard an Asian Cruise (with stops in Thailand and Malaysia which I still have to blog about!). Although it was definitely challenging, the memories are really something we would treasure forever.
Miley starting school
A huge milestone for us this year was Miley starting preschool. From having trial classes, going to summer school, and finally experiencing sending her off to her first day... Each activity was so exciting for us, like attending the parent-teacher conferences, family day, getting her report card, etc. There were some tough times at first but she's grown so much since school started. Can you believe she was even chosen to lead the opening prayer at their Christmas program? I've never felt so nervous and proud in my life after she said all her lines like a pro in front of the entire audience! And she danced so well too in their class performance.
Next year, it will be Sabe's turn to start school and I honestly can't wait to see how he'll do. :)
Baby #3!
Of course, the biggest highlight of this year was me getting pregnant! We're so excited for this new addition to our family and can't wait to meet the little one already...
2013 has been so good to us, I'm hoping 2014 will be even better. With me and hubby celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary and with a new baby on the way, I think the new year is definitely looking good... :)

Repost: 28 Rules For Fathers Of Sons
I'm sure most of you have already read or seen this article that's made its way around social media. But if you're like me who just read it for the first time, then allow me to share it here again since I absolutely loved it and couldn't help but tear up after getting to the end. :)
28 RULES FOR FATHERS OF SONS
1. Love his Mother. He will learn to love like you love, and hate like you hate. So choose love for both of you. Devote yourself to it. Love with your whole heart and express that love each and every day. Then, someday down the road, you will see the way he loves his own wife, and know that you played a part in that.
2. Let him drive. Every child remembers the first time they drove on daddy’s lap. For that one moment, he will believe that he is just. like. you.
3. Teach him to be picky. Especially when it comes to women and burgers. Teach him to never settle.
4. Take him to a ball game. There is something about sharing a day of hot dogs, sunshine and baseball with your father.
5. Love with Bravery. Boys have this preconceived notion that they have to be tough. When he is young, he will express his love fully and innocently. As he grows, he will hide his feelings and wipe off kisses. Teach him to be a man who rubs them in instead. It takes courage for a man to show love: teach him to be courageous.
6. Talk about sex. Sometimes, boys need to know that all men are created equal.
7. Teach him to be a man’s man. Show him how to be brave and tough around the guys. Then, remind him on the ride home that it is okay to cry.
8. Share secrets together. Communicate. Talk. Talk about anything. Let him tell you about girls, friends, school. Listen. Ask questions. Share dreams, hopes, concerns. He is not only your son, you are not only his father. Be his friend too.
9. Teach him manners. Because sometimes you have to be his father, not just his friend. The world is a happier place when made up of polite words and smiles.
10. Teach him when to stand-up and when to walk away. He should know that he doesn’t have to throw punches to prove he is right. He may not always be right. Make sure he knows how to demand respect- he is worthy of it. It does not mean he has to fight back with fists or words, because sometimes you say more with silence.
11. Teach him to choose his battles. Make sure he knows which battles are worth fighting- like for family or his favorite baseball team. Remind him that people can be mean and nasty because of jealousy, or other personal reasons. Help him to understand when to shut his mouth and walk-away. Teach him to be the bigger better person.
12. Let him dance in tighty whiteys. Dance alongside him in yours. Teach him that there are moments when it is okay to be absolutely ridiculous.
13. Share music. Introduce him to the classics and learn the words to the not-so-classics. Create a rock band with wooden instruments, share your earphones, and blast Pink Floyd in the car. Create a soundtrack to your lives together.
14. Let him win. Sometimes he needs to know that big things are possible.
15. Teach him about family. Let him know family is always worth fighting for. Family is always worth standing up for. At the end of the day, he has you to fall back on, and pray to God that you will have him.
16. Father him. Being a father—to him—is undoubtedly one of your greatest accomplishments. Share with him the joys of fatherhood, so one day he will want to be a father too. Remind him over and over again with words and kisses that no one will ever love him like you love him.
17. Listen to him now. If you don’t listen to the little things now, he won’t share the big things later.
18. Let him try on your shoes. Even if they are old and smelly. Let him slip his little feet in and watch him as he hopes like hell that someday he can fill them. He will fill them.
19. Give him bear hugs. The kind that squeezes his insides and make him giggle. The kind of hug only a daddy can give.
20. Give him baths. Because Mom can’t do everything damnit.
21. Teach him how to pee standing up. Let him pee outside- such is the joy of being a man. Mom cannot teach this talent, so someone has to.
22. Know the answers. He will assume you do. If you don’t know them, pretend you do and look them up later.
23. Toss him around. Because little boys love seeing the strength of their father. Throw him up in the air, so that he knows you will always be there to catch him on his way down.
24. Ask his mother. He will come to you with questions that he won’t always want to ask his mother, about girls and about love. Ask her anyway, she will know the answers.
25. Love him like you would love a daughter. Little girls are not the only ones who need hugs and kisses. Love is the color yellow of emotions. It is both happy and gender neutral.
26. Grow a big belly. Because every child should get the chance to rest their head on the absolute softest pillow ever. Daddy’s belly is the best place to land.
27. Don’t say, do. American inventor Charles F. Kettering once said, “every father should remember that one day his son will follow his example instead of his advice.” Be a good one.
28. Be his hero. You are anyway. To him, you have the strength of Batman, the speed of Spiderman and the brain of Ironman. Don’t disappoint. Prove to him that Daddy’s are the biggest heroes of all. Only Daddy’s can save the day.

I've been keeping a BIG secret...
How time flies! It's now November and before we know it, it's already Christmas and then the start of another new year.
And since everything's been moving so fast, I finally feel that it's time I shared with you something I've been keeping under the radar for many months now...
I'm now in my last trimester and we couldn't feel more excited and blessed about this new addition to our family. :)
Whereas we were more open during our first 2 pregnancies, this time hubby and I just wanted to keep the news to ourselves for a while. In fact, we only told immediate family at first and then other family members and just a few close friends after the 1st trimester. Even up to now, some of our friends still don't know we're expecting since my baby bump isn't that obvious from most of the pictures I post on Facebook or Instagram hehe. Although some very sharp-eyed people have noticed it and have messaged me privately asking if I was pregnant. ;p
It's not that we're hiding the news or anything, it's just that our views have slightly changed over the past years. Of course if it's your first pregnancy, wanting to share the news to everyone, on every social media platform is understandable (as well as sharing ultrasound photos, doctor updates, etc.).
This being our 3rd baby does not lessen the excitement factor one bit, it's just that we didn't feel the need to announce the information publicly (hindi naman tayo artista na kailangan may press release pa diba? haha!). We wanted to share the news with family and friends personally. And I've noticed that more and more of my friends have been doing the same, whether it's their first pregnancy or not. Someone I know just posted a picture of her 2nd baby after she gave birth, without most people knowing she was even pregnant.
And of course, there's always that anxiety factor. Of wanting to be sure everything is normal and the baby is healthy before coming out in the open. You don't want to jinx anything too right? ;p
So there, I hope you understand why I've just shared this news only now. After this, I can already post my pictures with my huge tummy haha! And finally, I hope you'll keep me in your prayers in this last stretch... I have to admit I'm getting nervous but of course still super excited for another milestone in my life. :)

SURPRISE! We are expecting baby no. 3!!!

Another year older
Yahoo, today is my birthday! Haha, I wish I could be as excited as I was when I was a kid every time my birthday would come along. But as the years pass by, I honestly don't get as thrilled as I used to about growing older hehe. I keep joking with hubby that I've stopped counting my age last year when I turned 30. ;p Well, I'm 31 now and as they say, nasa kalendaryo pa naman ako e haha! And this will be my mantra from now on:
Ladies, don't you agree? haha! ;p Anyway, here's some lines from a birthday poem someone sent me:

Ladies, don't you agree? haha! ;p Anyway, here's some lines from a birthday poem someone sent me:
Another day older,
more pages added to my folder.
I'm glad of whom I am today,
I would not have myself any other way
So don't mind that I write my own birthday
rhyme,
I've lived through
my life up till this time.
I think it is safe to
say,
that things will go as
planned His way.
He's got more for me yet,
It'll be even better I
bet.
Another year older,
and I am in His debt.
Seriously, I have so many things to be thankful for and I'm just
so happy for all the blessings that I've received in my life. My 20's was great
with me getting married and having kids but I can't wait for all the other
things that my 30's has in store for me. Bring it on! :)

The week that was
Whew! Finally, I've found some time to blog again! :) This past week has been a really busy one for me. First, my 3-year old daughter Miley officially started school. But before that, we had a parents orientation where we were introduced to all the teachers and the rules & guidelines were discussed. Then, it was Miley's 1st day already! It was really such a milestone seeing her in her uniform and bag. :) I'm so glad we enrolled her in summer classes since she was such a trooper when we dropped her at school. Sanay na sanay na hehe! And it was so exciting picking her up and seeing if she had stamps on her hand (we're supposed to know how their performance for the day went if they had 2 stamps, 1 stamp, or no stamps). After getting 1 stamp only the first two days and then no stamps, finally Miley got 2 stamps yesterday! Yahoo! Gosh, I wish I could really sit in the classes to know what they do hehe! But anyway, I still can't believe my baby's all grown up already huhuhu! Pretty soon, I'll be dropping her off in high school na... ;p
Also, with hubby at work and my in-laws on a month long vacation abroad, I am now the official driver of my daughter to school!
I am so glad I finally learned to drive (after the 3rd try haha!). It's also a milestone for me since for the first time, hubby wasn't there with me in the car. It was just me, the kids and yaya. I was really nervous at first, especially since it was raining hard last Monday! But after a whole week of driving Miley to and from school, I feel like such a pro already! In fact, after picking her up from school yesterday, we even went to the grocery after. And I was able to park successfully woohoo! It feels really great to finally be able to go places without having to ask someone to drive me. I feel so independent haha! I still have to work on my parking skills though and also driving to farther areas like Makati. :)
Side kwento though, after doing the grocery yesterday, I bought medicine at the pharmacy. It was starting to rain again pretty hard so I was rushing to get home. Anyway, like I said, I was so happy with how the day went but after dinner, it suddenly dawned on me that I never got the medicines I bought! I don't know why, but after signing my credit card bill, I left to go to the parking already. And for some reason, the person at the pharmacy never handed me my package or even ran after me as I was waiting for the elevator! Haaay naku! Well, I called them up last night and yes, my medicines were still there. So excuse me while I go back to the grocery and pick them up. ;p

Good Read: The Important Thing About Yelling
Oh my... I'm very emotional right now after reading this wonderful post from Rachel Macy Stafford from her blog www.handsfreemama.com. I was crying by the time I finished the article because it was just so touching and so true. Maybe some of you have already come across this article through a link from Facebook (like me) but if you haven't, please take time to read it (even the comments section has some great insights).
As a stay at home mom to two young kids (aged 3 and 2), I have to admit that there are times when I just lose it. One minute, my kids and I are all getting along, laughing and playing. Then suddenly, they both end up fighting over something, the snack they're eating spills everywhere on the floor, they're both crying at the top of their lungs, they don't want to listen to me, the whole house is a mess... and I just feel so out of control! And of course, even if you're the most patient person out there, there will be times when you will just snap and yell. And I admit to doing that.
I love how this line sums up everything:
"yelling shuts down the communication; it severs the bond; it causes people to separate—instead of come closer."
Here are some more beautiful words from the article to end this post:

It's become so
easy for me to yell over the smallest things when I'm sleepy, hungry, or
overwhelmed. Or even when my kids are asking for attention when I'm busy with
something (like blogging!). And no matter how hard you try to put everything in
order, there will be instances when
they write on the walls, break something, try to put their fingers through the
electric fan, step on the iPad, and many many more... And my initial response
would be to yell stuff like "NO! WHY DID YOU DO THAT? STOP THAT! THAT'S
BAD!" I see it as a way to discipline them, to prevent them from getting
hurt, because I love them.
But I have to realize that they don't know what
they're doing is wrong. They're babies and these are all new to them. It's important to understand that we are there to teach our
children. My job as a parent is to educate them and not get annoyed
when they do something I'm sure they had no idea was wrong. By yelling at them,
we instill fear in them to try new things, to explore, to be themselves. I've
noticed lately that when my 3 year old daughter does something, her immediate response is to say
"SORRY!" even when it isn't her fault or it was just an accident. It
made me realize that maybe I've been scolding her way too much that's why it's
become normal for her to apologize over everything. I definitely don't want my
kids to be scared of me that is why I am thankful for this article because it
has really inspired me and opened my eyes to change.
Here are some more beautiful words from the article to end this post:
"The important thing is … it’s not too late to stop yelling.
The important thing is … children forgive–especially if they see the person they love trying to change.
The important thing is … life is too short to get upset over spilled cereal and misplaced shoes.
The important thing is … no matter what happened yesterday, today is a new day.
Today we can choose a peaceful response.
And in doing so, we can teach our children that peace builds bridges—bridges that can carry us over in times of trouble."

Best Starts with Dad
Growing up, my father was never around since he had
to work abroad. I remember how our relationship was formed through letters and
long distance phone calls (I have to say that Facetime and Skype is really such
a blessing now!). I remember being so jealous of my other classmates and
friends when their dads would pick them up from school or be around for family
day. In my case, I got to spend time with my dad when we would visit him during
the summer.
I remember one particular time when it was my 10th
birthday and my dad was finally able to go home. He took me and my friends out
to a movie and then to Glico’s after (remember that place in Glorietta? It was
the coolest hangout for us kids back then! ;p). I remember being so proud and
happy that my dad was finally there in the flesh.
Even though my dad wasn’t there
physically most of the time, he still taught me valuable lessons in life. Like
how to be a strong and independent woman. I learned to be tough at a young age
because it was just me and my mom. I became an achiever in school. I strived
more and was determined to succeed and make everyone, especially my dad, proud
of me.
Now, having children myself, I’m so
thankful that they can spend time with their dad growing up, unlike me. Like my
mom, I also became a housewife so that I can be the one to raise my kids. Of
course most children are really more attached to their mothers at a young age
because it’s the moms, especially stay-at-home ones, who
spend the most time with them. I’m sure every father has felt unappreciated and
even unwanted at some point in their lives. I remember this post I saw online
about how when the kids are with their moms, they ask so many questions like “Mom can I eat this?”, “Mom, can I go out?”, “Mom, can I watch this?” etc etc. But
when they’re left alone with their dad, they only ask one thing – “WHERE’S
MOM?” hahaha! Actually I can relate, but that doesn’t mean that a
father’s role is any less important.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it
again - I am so thankful to my hubby for being so encouraging and allowing me
to stay at home while he works to support us. I know he, like many other
fathers, has missed out on special moments and milestones. They sacrifice this
in order to give their family the best life possible. But it just proves how
strong they are because I’m sure any dad would gladly give anything to spend
more time with his kids if he could.
That is why I find it so great that Mead Johnson Nutrition recognizes not just mothers but fathers as
well in giving the best starts for their kids. Hubby has been so hands on as a
father ever since and he still is until now. I know I wouldn’t have handled
being a new mother as well without him being there every step of the way. But
I’ll be honest. There are times that I go crazy at home with 2 rowdy kids
turning the house upside down, fighting with each other, wanting my undivided
attention when all I want is a minute to myself. This is when hubby steps in,
taking the kids while I take a few deep breaths to calm myself down. After a
while, I find them in their room, laughing and playing with their dad like
nothing was wrong 10 minutes ago (I guess good cop / bad cop really does work
;p). But seriously, I think dads are there to balance out us crazy, dramatic
moms! And when the kids don’t want to listen to me, I find that asking dad to
talk to them sometimes works better. ;p
As our kids are growing up so quickly, I’m glad
that I have their dad here to help me raise our children to be strong,
well-rounded individuals. I recall this quote “Any man can be a father. It takes someone special to be a dad.” And
I am lucky that the man I married has turned out to be such a loving, devoted
and wonderful dad. Even though he comes home tired from work, he makes an
effort to play with the kids, take them to the park, and the most important
duty of all - wash their butts after they do number 2 (he really is an expert
already haha!). We still have a long road ahead of us (both kids will be in
school already by next year, and I don’t even want to think about the teenage
years!) but I think we have a pretty good foundation which hopefully will
translate well even as our kids become adults in the future. J

I voted today! Did you?
I'm proud to say that I've voted in every election since I became a registered voter. I almost broke the streak today since I'm still registered in my old precinct and I wasn't really looking forward to going all the way there just to vote (I'm amazed at people who go home to their provinces just to vote! kudos to them ;p). Luckily, we were able to stay with my mom during the weekend, so we just extended to today so I could go with her. :)
Anyway, we headed to the voting area bright and early at 7am. On the way there, people were handing out sample ballots like those below. It's so obvious who were giving them out since they really highlight who to vote for, especially for the mayor and councilors.
There were already quite a number of people there when we arrived. In our assigned classroom, there were probably 10 people ahead of us in line, but they kept letting senior citizens and pregnant women go first. This was understandable, but then we noticed that there was this 1 woman who didn't even seem pregnant who cut in line (not to be mean but she was on the heavy side and had a big stomach). The volunteers were clear that they were only prioritizing pregnant women 7 months up. Now I've been pregnant twice and I sure know what a pregnant woman looks like. But this girl's stomach honestly just seemed flabby. And even if she was pregnant, it sure wasn't 7 months. She and her other companions were kind of laughing like they got away with it. Even the other people in line started to notice and complain and they notified the volunteers. Good thing the woman did go back to the line after they questioned her. I was just so annoyed that people would do anything just to gain a few extra minutes. If we all just line up properly (and honestly) I'm sure things would go much quickly and smoothly.
We were finally able to enter the voting room with the PCOS machine. Again, there were people who they allowed to go first since they were from the COMELEC daw (but shouldn't these people set a good example by lining up properly like the rest of us? haaaaay). Also, I noticed that they didn't even ask for IDs. :(
It only took me a few minutes to vote, but there were some people who were taking so long it was like they were taking an actual exam hehe! And some were still asking how many senators or councilors to vote for even if it was clearly stated in the ballot (can I just say I happened to see someone just vote for 1 senator?! I happened to glance by his ballot when we were lining up to submit it and he just had 1 black mark in the senator section... Uh-oh!).
Anyway, it took us a total of 1 hour to vote. I guess it wasn't so bad compared to others, but I also saw on FB that some only took 10 minutes in their area. As they say, you really can't complain about the people in office if you didn't exercise your right to vote. I'm just hoping and praying that qualified and deserving people get elected to office.
Anyway, we headed to the voting area bright and early at 7am. On the way there, people were handing out sample ballots like those below. It's so obvious who were giving them out since they really highlight who to vote for, especially for the mayor and councilors.

| we still had a hard time finding our classroom despite this map |

Uh-oh!).
