Another school year, another kid enters big school

I can't believe summer is officially over for us and it's now the start of another year in the big school. My son is entering Grade 1 while my daughter is now in Grade 2.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to buy a baro't saya or Maria Clara outfit for my daughter since there wasn't one available in the mall I went to. DIY Knight Costume

My kids had a Royal Court Parade activity in school and they had to come in medieval looking costumes like a king, queen, princess, knight or jester. Finding an outfit for my daughter was easy since we had so many Disney Princess gowns in her closet. In fact, her big dilemma was which dress to wear lol!

My problem was my son's costume since all he had were superhero outfits. And I didn't want to spend for something he was only going to probably use once. So I had to whip out my DIY skills to the rescue! This costume is so easy you can do it in 10 minutes and it cost practically nothing (if you have all the materials already like me).

Goodbye Summer, Hello School!

We are officially done with the 1st week of school! I can't believe summer has come and gone so quickly. Now we're back to homework and baon and hatid-sundo. :)

Last May, we enrolled Sabe in a summer program in order to prepare him for school. Like I mentioned in my post last month, it was really a struggle for us since Sabe was really crying the whole time and didn't want to be left alone during the first few days. It took a while, but eventually he started to warm up to his teachers and began enjoying himself.

Watching him perform during the culminating activity made me so proud because I could really tell how much progress he made during all those weeks. From the scared little boy who didn't want to let go of me, he was now able to interact with his classmates and follow the teacher's directions.

But I have say, we were anxious again during his official first day last Monday since he didn't want to wake up in the morning and was giving us a hard time dressing him up. He was very cranky in the car but all that changed the minute we got to school. He confidently went inside, greeted the teachers and walked to his classroom like a pro! We couldn't believe it! We were prepared for some tears but I'm so glad we were wrong. :)

Miley, on the other hand, had ballet lessons this summer. As a mom, I really couldn't wait for the day I could finally bring my daughter to ballet class. I have to say though that I think she enjoyed making new friends more than the dancing itself. She would always be making chika her classmates and I'd always have to signal for her to follow the teacher haha!

To be honest, we weren't really expecting much from her dance recital since it seemed like she wasn't that into it. But I was really surprised when she gave a wonderful performance and was able to do all the steps. I'm so proud of her for finishing the program however she says she doesn't want to do ballet anymore. Swimming classes na lang daw! Ok fine! My ballet dreams are forever crushed haha! ;p

Miley used to be in the afternoon batch last year, but I moved both of them to the morning classes this year. They're still getting used to sleeping and waking up early (especially Sabe!). But I'm happy that any moodiness disappears once they get to school. And I have to be honest and say that I do quite enjoy the few hours of peace and quiet I get in the morning when both kids are at school lol! ;p

Sabe starts summer school

It's getting so hard for me to blog nowadays since Sabe has officially started summer classes. My day is spent driving him to school, waiting for him to finish the 2-hour class, then taking him out after for milk tea (his favorite!). I also usually do errands after with him in tow, like the grocery. When I get home, it's playtime with Miley and of course back to having Skyler attached to me with his marathon nursing sessions. I usually just want to lie in bed with the aircon on since this heat is making me too lazy to do anything!

Anyway, just like Miley last year, we enrolled Sabe in this month-long summer program (9-11 am / M-W-F) to get him used to the classroom feel before classes start in June. I already knew it would be more difficult with Sabe since he's more attached to us and has a bad case of separation anxiety. Unlike Miley who loves interacting with other children, Sabe also prefers to play alone or only with his Ate. He's also very possessive and hasn't really learned how to share (well, we're getting there...). Oh, and he bites too sometimes (ayayay!). So naturally, we were nervous on how he was going to act in a new environment with other kids.

As expected, it was already a struggle getting him to wake up early and get dressed. When we rode the car, he kept saying he wanted to go to the restaurant and not to school! When we got to the school, he seemed excited at first, but that only lasted for about a minute...

Since it was the first day, there were a LOT of kids crying and clinging to their parents/yayas. What was funny though is that all the crying kids were the BOYS! The girls were all very good, just playing happily with the toys and each other. I guess girls really mature faster than boys hehe. I mean Miley last year was also a bit hesitant on the first day but she didn't cry and enjoyed herself thoroughly with all the activities. We only needed to accompany her on the 1st day and then we were able to leave her already by herself by the 2nd day.

Now with Sabe, he started to panic once we stepped inside the classroom and he saw the crying kids. He immediately clung to me and started asking "WHERE'S ATE MILEY???" When he realized that his sister wouldn't be there, he started bawling and wanted to go home. I was carrying him trying to calm him down but he would reply to everything I said with a big fat NO or I DONT LIKE! He was screaming, crying, pulling me to the door... "I WANT TO GO HOOOOOOME!!!!!" I was already so tired, sweating like crazy, my hair a mess. And this was only the first 5 minutes! But don't worry, Sabe wasn't the noisiest. There was another boy who was worse than him lol! ;p

After a few more minutes, I was thankfully able to calm him down. The teacher called all the other kids to the front of the room to sing and dance. We were just in the back and Sabe agreed to play with some toys. He would occasionally join the song though (The Wheels on the Bus) so I knew there was hope!

Anyway, when it was time to play outside, Sabe actually got excited when he saw the slide. He played for a bit, then started to look for me again. He then remembered that he wanted to go home and even got his bag and started pulling me again towards the door. All I know is that I kept encouraging him to finish the class (maybe even some bribing was involved lol). He also did an arts & crafts activity and although it was only for a short while, I was still so proud of him.

I was able to take some pictures and it's so funny because when you look at it, you'll get the impression that he had so much fun and it was such a breeze. WRONG! Haha like I said, don't be fooled by the pics since he was crying almost 80% of the time! ;p

If on the first day almost all the parents/yayas were in the classroom, on the 2nd day we were only about 3 na lang. As expected, the school encourages the guardians to stay in the waiting area already so that the kids will learn to be independent. So I slipped out of the classroom, leaving Sabe when I saw him playing with the teacher. But after a few minutes, I could hear someone screaming and it sounded a lot like Sabe. So when I peeked in the window, I saw him being carried by the teacher crying unconsolably. I tried to give it a few more minutes but he wasn't stopping so I asked if I could go inside. Once he saw me, he stopped crying and just wanted to be carried. Of course, now he wouldn't let me out of his sight! But there was a huge improvement already since he was more willing to join in the activities compared to the first day. There was also less crying, as long as he could see me around.

We decided to already leave him alone in the next couple of days, so he could really get used to being in class without us. Of course, he would still cry and it would take all our effort not to go back inside but we know it's for his own good. The first day we left him, the teacher said that he was crying almost the entire 2 hours, but then after a while, he was able to calm down and even participate in some activities. The next day, the teacher said he only cried for about 10 minutes, then was already ok after. He still cries whenever we leave him but I know it will definitely get better (hopefully soon!).

He is definitely improving everyday and whenever we pick him up, he's so happy and excited to show us the stamp in his hand. We're halfway done with his summer classes so I hope that by the end of the program, Sabe will already be ready for his actual school in June. Fingers crossed! :)

I found this picture so cute which was included in Miley's compilation CD from her year in nursery. Isn't she so wacky? Ang galing talaga mag emote! ;p And I have to say that she really loves books and always asks me to read her a story or just make one up. Our favorite is the story about "Miley-rella", the princess who doesn't want to sleep. I always tell this to her when she refuses to take a nap in the hopes of getting her to sleep... pero it never seems to work hehe!

We've been so busy lately and I'm so behind on so many posts! I can't wait to share our little vacation in the beach, a photoshoot that Miley and I did, plus we also have to attend 2 events later today which I'll also be blogging about soon. All the kids were also sick last week with colds (including poor baby Skyler!). But thankfully they're all ok now because there's so many upcoming activities this April like the start of their summer classes.

Update on Miley's schooling

First, the good. Miley has been adjusting really well in school. We can see that she's really enjoying herself because whenever we bring her inside the school grounds, she runs inside her classroom and starts playing with the other kids. Her vocabulary has also increased and improved. Sometimes, we'll hear her saying words that we didn't even know she knew! And she's also starting to learn how to write some letters and draw shapes. :)

But then, there's also the bad. About 3 weeks into school, I picked up Miley on a Monday and was told by one of the aides that she was still inside because her teacher was talking to her. I asked if anything was wrong and the aide said to just wait for the teacher. My heart started beating a little faster. My gosh, wala pang 1 month kakausapin na ako ng teacher! Well, to make the long story short, Miley would apparently hug her classmates and not let go, so then they would fall to the floor. Basically, she was the one who started this "game" so all the other kids started hugging each other too and they ended up all rolling on the floor. Then there was a also a little shouting and not listening situation. Well, the thing was, the teacher was not Miley's regular teacher (who was on leave that day) so we figured maybe Miley just wasn't used to this new person in the classroom. But anyway, the resolution was to just talk to Miley about it.

On Wednesday, I wasn't feeling well so hubby picked up Miley from school. Well, Miley's regular teacher was back and she requested to talk to hubby too! The issue this time was that Miley had a schoolmate (different section) who she found super cute. Actually, I saw the little girl before na and cute naman talaga She was very small and chubby and I guess Miley saw her as a doll or "baby sister". Miley would apparently get "gigil" with the girl and sometimes pinch and run after her. The little girl became afraid of Miley tuloy and the parents were scared baka matrauma na to go to school. Also, Miley was still doing her "hugging game" which would really disrupt class. She also didn't finish her seatwork that day and started running holding a pencil. Of course, the teacher ran after her too and took the pencil away. Miley started crying and said "I want my Mommy! I'll only listen to my Mommy!"

Ayayay! You see, when I was a kid, my mom never had any problems with me in school. Even in preschool, I was always a star student (not to brag or anything ;p). I guess I kind of expected it to be the same for me, that's why I was really affected when barely a month into school and we're getting this kind of feedback. Promise, I couldn't sleep sa sobrang affected!

Hubby and I talked to Miley about it but I was really confused as to how to address the situation. Miley kasi loves kids and playing with other children. She's also very affectionate since we hug and kiss her all the time and we encourage her to be the same with her brother. Now tuloy, we're telling her not to hug her classmates - only Sabe, mom, dad (and family). We also tell her not to pinch or run after anyone, and to be more specific, to just stay away from the little girl for now. Pero baka naman we're restricting her from making new friends? Haaay it's so hard to be a parent sometimes...

Anyway, we talked again to the teacher a couple of days after to check on Miley's behavior and according to her, there was a big improvement already. YEY! *big sigh of relief!*

Now just last Thursday, I picked Miley up from school. I was just in the car (in major pambahay no less) waiting for yaya to get her, when the teacher came outside to talk to me. She said there was an accident a while ago and someone got bitten. My first thought was that Miley bit someone! But apparently it was the other way around. Here's the accident report slip I was given:

It was during playtime when all the kids (even those from other sections) play together. Miley hugged Javi (a boy from another section) and I guess Javi didn't like to be hugged or he found it too tight. So he bit her. Of course Miley cried (a LOT) and they placed cold compress on her arm. Here's a picture I took 3 days after, and you can see the bruise is still showing... my poor baby!

Hubby was more upset than me and wanted to talk to the directress of the school on the phone just to check how the situation was handled. According to the school, they were able to separate the kids naman at once and also to talk to the boy and his parents as well. Also, they would keep a watchful eye on Miley and the boy in the coming days to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Good thing Miley is very resilient and she's used to getting bitten by her brother (naku, baka next year si Sabe naman ang may issue with biting someone lol!) so I don't think that experience will traumatize her. In fact, it was as if nothing happened the next day when we brought her to school, she was still excited as ever to play with her classmates. I just hope we don't have any more issues or accidents anytime soon... my gosh kakastart pa lang ng schoolyear diba!

Sorry if this post is really long and bordering on rambling... I just get very emotional sometimes thinking how my baby is in school and I have to trust the teachers/faculty to look after her while we're not there. I just wish that we could be with the kids ALL the time to see what and how they're doing, but of course that's impossible. I just always pray that my kids will be kept safe and away from harm during the times that they're not with me. And to think this is just nursery! I'm sure it will get more challenging when they get older. Don't you wish sometimes that your kids can stay babies forever? Haaaay...

Well, I really hope that I won't have to blog about any bad incident again regarding Miley in school. Hopefully, it will all go uphill from here. Wish us luck! :)

The week that was

Whew! Finally, I've found some time to blog again! :) This past week has been a really busy one for me. First, my 3-year old daughter Miley officially started school. But before that, we had a parents orientation where we were introduced to all the teachers and the rules & guidelines were discussed. Then, it was Miley's 1st day already! It was really such a milestone seeing her in her uniform and bag. :) I'm so glad we enrolled her in summer classes since she was such a trooper when we dropped her at school. Sanay na sanay na hehe! And it was so exciting picking her up and seeing if she had stamps on her hand (we're supposed to know how their performance for the day went if they had 2 stamps, 1 stamp, or no stamps). After getting 1 stamp only the first two days and then no stamps, finally Miley got 2 stamps yesterday! Yahoo! Gosh, I wish I could really sit in the classes to know what they do hehe! But anyway, I still can't believe my baby's all grown up already huhuhu! Pretty soon, I'll be dropping her off in high school na... ;p

Also, with hubby at work and my in-laws on a month long vacation abroad, I am now the official driver of my daughter to school!

I am so glad I finally learned to drive (after the 3rd try haha!). It's also a milestone for me since for the first time, hubby wasn't there with me in the car. It was just me, the kids and yaya. I was really nervous at first, especially since it was raining hard last Monday! But after a whole week of driving Miley to and from school, I feel like such a pro already! In fact, after picking her up from school yesterday, we even went to the grocery after. And I was able to park successfully woohoo! It feels really great to finally be able to go places without having to ask someone to drive me. I feel so independent haha! I still have to work on my parking skills though and also driving to farther areas like Makati. :)

Side kwento though, after doing the grocery yesterday, I bought medicine at the pharmacy. It was starting to rain again pretty hard so I was rushing to get home. Anyway, like I said, I was so happy with how the day went but after dinner, it suddenly dawned on me that I never got the medicines I bought! I don't know why, but after signing my credit card bill, I left to go to the parking already. And for some reason, the person at the pharmacy never handed me my package or even ran after me as I was waiting for the elevator! Haaay naku! Well, I called them up last night and yes, my medicines were still there. So excuse me while I go back to the grocery and pick them up. ;p

Miley's Summer School experience

When we decided on Miley's preschool, we were encouraged to enroll her in summer class. It was a 3-week program (9-11am / M-W-F) to basically get incoming new students used to the classroom feel and be comfortable before their actual classes start. You know, so they won't cry anymore during their 1st official school day even without mommy & daddy around. :)

I was really nervous for Miley's 1st day since I didn't know how she would react. And to top it all off, I even drove the car to school (if you remember, I just finished driving classes 2 months ago so I'm still new at this). Well, we got there in one piece although hubby had to park the car for me hihi!

There were already lots of kids when we arrived. What was great is that our family friends also enrolled their daughter here, so at least Miley already knew someone. :)

Well, as expected, most of the kids were crying and clinging to their parents/guardians. When we went inside their classroom, I was able to leave Miley and step out. But I think she realized that the other kids still had their mommies around, so she started looking for me. Well, I pretty much stayed the entire time inside the classroom, along with most of the other moms haha! But I honestly didn't mind because I got to see the activities they did and how Miley interacted with the other kids. Let me tell you though, I think Miley was the most active out of all the students! She kept running around and playing with the other kids (holding their hands, touching their hair) while the teacher was reading them a story. And she was so BIBO haha! When the teacher got the arts and crafts materials, Miley got so excited. She kept standing in front of the teacher while the teacher was explaining and kept saying "my turn! my turn!" Uh-oh, looks like the teacher got herself a handful hehe!

Anyway, Miley was able to really focus when they did arts & crafts. Look at the stuff she made, even the teacher was impressed at how well Miley colored the octopus! Good job baby!

When I brought Miley to school for her 2nd day of summer class, she immediately started playing with the toys inside the classroom. I used this time to step out and stay at the waiting area. Based on my experience - out of sight, out of mind. As long as Miley doesn't catch a glimpse of me outside the classroom, she'll be okay as long as the teachers are able to distract her. Because once she sees me, then she'll start asking for me and would want me to stay inside. And it worked! I was outside for 2 hours and the teacher didn't come and get me. When I picked her up after class, the teacher said she was fine (and much behaved than last time hehe). I just wished there was a TV in the waiting room that shows what is going on inside the classroom. Wouldn't that be a great idea? ;p It's just that I kept asking Miley what they did and she would give such vague answers haha!

Me: Miley did you have fun in school today?
Miley: Uh-huh
Me: What did you do?
Miley: *smiles*
Me: Did you dance?
Miley: Uh-huh
Me: Did you sing?
Miley: Uh-huh
Me: What story did the teacher read?
Miley: Turtle...
Hubby: Ah! Turtle and the Rabbit!
Miley: no, the HARE! (onga naman)

Well, from then on, we would have no problems leaving her in school. Once she enters the classroom, she immediately starts playing and won't even look back at us (ahuhu so this is how it starts...lol!). There were other kids who were still crying and had their mommies with them in all sessions (actually there were times I would secretly hope Miley would ask me to stay ;p). I'm just so happy that she was able to adjust so quickly (hopefully, Sabe will follow suit ;p).

At the end of the program, I was surprised to receive a letter that they would be having a culminating activity with performances from the students! I was so excited and nervous at the same time. I just didn't know if Miley would dance in front of people. Well... SHE DID! I was afraid that once she saw us she would run to us or something (of course, we got a seat on the front row hehe). But, she was able to do the steps, although there were times she would get distracted or want to play with the other kids. But she was able to get through it and I couldn't be happier and prouder! After the performance, they distributed the kids' certificates and portfolios (which were the artworks they did). I was just beaming with pride the whole time. And to think this is just for SUMMER SCHOOL haha! What more when it's their real graduation from grade school, high school, or college? It was just a really great feeling as a parent. :)

Now, we're done with enrollment and all set for Miley's 1st official school day. I can't wait to see her in her uniform! I think I'll cry haha! Anyway, I gotta go practice driving some more since I'll be the designated driver once the school year starts. Wish us luck! ;p

How we chose our daughter's preschool

A few months ago, I posted about how I was looking for a preschool for my 3 year old daughter Miley. We went on a tour of 4 schools near our area and Miley had trial classes in 2 of them. I hope you understand if I don't share the names of the schools here in my blog. It's just that I want to keep where my kids would go to school private. :) Anyway, I'll just share with you the pros and cons of each school and how we ended up with our final choice. I'm sure like every parent, choosing the right school for your child can be quite a challenge.

School 1 was the nearest to our place. It was also the smallest among all the schools we visited. There was only 1 classroom per level, so about 4 classrooms total. Hubby liked it because since it was so small, he figured Miley wouldn't be overwhlemed and matututukan un kids. But I felt that it lacked the school setting that would prepare her for big school. The tuition fee was reasonable but I kinda wasn't feeling the teachers when Miley had her trial class...

School 2 was one of the top choices in the area. It also had the most expensive tuition fee at a whopping 100k! But you could see why because the school was immaculate, the classrooms were big, the facilities looked clean and new, plus they had a huge play area for the kids. We had a number of friends whose kids go here and they kept raving about the place. So it was so hard because even though we would love to send our kids here in a heartbeat, the tuition fee was just no joke.

School 3 was also a highly recommended school in our area. In fact, the daughter of a friend goes there. We went on a school tour and although everything looked impressive, I felt that the atmosphere was too strict and the teaching style wasn't for me. The tuition fee was also really expensive (a small difference with School 2).

School 4 was where Miley had her 1st trial class. I guess she had the most fun here because when we would ask her after where she wanted to go to school, she would consistently say this one. The school was just the right size and it had all the facilities I was lacking in School 1 - an activity area and even a kitchen for cooking and art activities. I also liked the teachers - in fact, the directress also lives in our village (um, pwede maki-carpool? lol!). The tuition fee was also very reasonable.

After much deliberation, we figured that although we would love to send our children to the top preschool, it really isn't practical at this time. Basically, most of their time would be spent playing and singing and dancing. It's really the interaction with other kids and discipline we want to foster. And as my father-in-law said, it's not about the school, the most important thing is having good teachers. Plus, with my son starting school next year as well, we have to be practical considering we're a single-income family. I mean, we have about 18 years of tuition to pay for (x2! eeep!). Maybe I really should start working again? ;p

Well, I'm happy to say that School 4 satisfied all our requirements - location (about 15 minutes from our place), teaching method (progressive), good facilities (they're currently renovating and improving some of the classrooms and other areas), teacher-student ratio (8 kids per class with a teacher & aide), and of course, a reasonable tuition fee (in fact this was the cheapest among the 4 schools yey!).

We enrolled her in the afternoon section since she has a hard time waking up (because she sleeps late!). Plus, it's just more convenient for our schedules.

They encourage incoming new students to take a summer program to prepare them for when classes start in June. We enrolled Miley and it was so much fun! I'll tell you all about it in my coming posts. :)

Finding the Right PreSchool

Here is my first big mission for the year! With Miley turning 3 next month, I think it's time for her to try going to school this year.

Actually, some of her (same age) friends have already begun last year, doing toddler or pre-nursery classes. Personally, I feel like 2 is just too young, especially since I'm sure they'll just spend most of the time playing (which they can do at home anyways). It's really more of the exposure to other kids that's important. Actually, Miley has already tried playschool once before, in Toddlers Unlimited. We had fun but since I'm a stay-at-home mom, there was really no pressure on our part to enroll Miley in full classes so early on. However, Miley has continued to be super shy around people (in fact I think it's gotten worse!), and we want to try putting her in school so she'll break out of her shell and learn to interact more.

I've started to do research and was surprised to find out that this K-12 system (Kinder plus Grade 1 through 12) has already been put in effect. The age cut-offs have been really confusing me too. Basically, Kinder starts at 5 years old, Grade 1 at 6 years old, and so on, until Grade 12 at 17 years old. So it's really basically the same (at least for those who have Grade 7 in their schools) - they just changed Prep with Grade 1 (gets?).

Anyway, based on Miley's age, she will be able to enter big school in 2015 for Kinder. For now, she still has to attend 2 years of nursery. My gosh, ang daming levels! And the tuition fees are no joke! If we don't enter her naman this year, our fear is that she will have a hard time adjusting later on. So, it's really just wanting her to get a feel of things and being exposed to more kids her age.

For now, I've been spending all day and night checking out the websites of different schools, reading parenting forums and comparing reviews from fellow moms. What I'm looking for is convenience in location, teaching method, good facilities, teacher/student ratio, and of course a reasonable tuition fee! ;p

I've narrowed it down to about 4 and I've already scheduled a school tour and a trial class in some preschools near our area. I feel like even if everything looks good on paper, you won't really know if that school may be the "one" unless you meet the teachers and see your child in that environment.
