DIY Crayon Lipsticks

My 5-year old daughter loves watching YouTube makeup tutorials and her favorite gurus are Michelle Phan, Promise Phan, and Charisma Star. She actually showed me this video of Promise Phan making her own lipsticks out of crayons, so of course we had to try it out too! :)

It's actually very easy and all you'll need are the ff:

crayons, oil, petroleum jelly, small containers

If you're wondering if this is safe, all the other videos and articles I read say it IS since crayons are made of paraffin wax which is also an ingredient used in lipsticks. And make sure you use a good brand like Crayola which is NONTOXIC.

Update: A reader shared this link from Crayola saying that although their products are nontoxic, they do not recommend using them for makeup. Personally, the process of making the lipsticks are the fun part for me and my daughter. And I think it's ok to use once or twice for play like we did but definitely not for everyday use. :)

In the video, it said to use coconut oil. But I watched other tutorials which said it was ok to use any other oil if you didn't have any coconut oil on hand. Some also didn't use petroleum jelly anymore, but I wanted to add this for more moisture and shine.

I also got these small stackable containers at Beabi which were about P50 for 3 layers (cheaper than getting the individual pots of the same size).

Anyway, choose what color you want and remove the wrapper around the crayon. Then just break the crayon into smaller pieces.

Put a teaspoon of oil and a little bit of petroleum jelly to a glass jar or bowl with your crayon pieces.

If you watch the video tutorial, you can put your glass jar in the center of a pot with water and warm it up on the stove. But an easier alternative would be to just use a microwave like we did! We just heated it for about 2 minutes and it did the trick just fine. But be careful getting it out, it's HOT!

There were still some solid crayon pieces after, so I just used a spoon to stir everything together. This will pretty much melt any solid particles for a nice, even mixture.

Then just quickly transfer it to your container.

And just pop in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes for it to set.

Tada! Here's the finished product! You can also experiment with mixing colors together to get different shades as well.

The lipsticks were sheer and glossy, but it definitely worked! Not sure about the blue and green colors though, maybe for Halloween haha! At least if you're thinking of being an alien or a ghost, now you know how to make your own lipstick. ;p

This is a great activity especially if you have a lot of broken crayon pieces around the house. So go ahead and give it a try! :)
